Solve A World Problem
By: Heston Wilson, introducing Vinny Long, James Karr, Wesley Fink, and Sarah Ng.
For this project we used the engineering design cycle to come up with a solution for our world problem. We were trying to solve big problems from a engineering standpoint. Our groups grouped up on basic interests for problems and then we picked more specifically what we wanted to solve. Then we researched subjects related to this problem and brainstormed ideas to solve the problem. From there, our groups worked on refining solutions and putting them into a presentable format.
Reflection:
For this project I felt that I still had some work to do on my teamwork skills. One of my low points was not really focusing as much as I should of. Also, not giving my group the leadership that it needed, One of my peaks was our groups presentation going well. Also, I felt that a high point was when I got back focused back again and our group started putting things together. Overall, I think our group did our best and the project came together well.
Concepts: The Engineering Design Cycle
The engineering design cycle is a multi stage process to design things using engineering.
Here is how we used the cycle to solve our world problem
1. Identify the need:
The first step in this project was to identify a problem. We then convened and decided the bay area needed better transportation for the future. No one likes traffic. If necessity is the mother of invention, then convenience is the father in-law.
2.Research the problem:
We then convened and decided to research certain parts of our problem. We researched transportation systems in other areas, and also benefits of transportation
3. Develop solutions/ Brainstorm:
We had a group brainstorm for 10 minutes and came up with lots of ideas. But few were promising solutions.
4. Select the most promising solution: Our group decided to go with connecting existing networks.
5.Construct a prototype:
We created a map and zoned out the stations for the train network.
6.Test and Evaluate the prototype:
After examination of the cost and structure of other networks, we concluded that our prototype was suitable.
7.Communicate the design:
We made a presentation of our project. The presentation is above and is in google slides. We followed the rule of 15 to make our presentation concise. Communicating clearly with multiple types of data was also important.
8.Redesign:
We did not get to this part in the project.
